Team Championship Series Games 6&7:

RedSox Side:

Game 6 - Tex Hughson (1-0) vs. Curt Schilling (2-0)

With everything on the line for the 2004 Sox they sent ace Curt Schilling out to battle against the 1946 RedSox in Game 6 against Tex Hughson. The 2004 squad opened up the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd with a solo homerun to center by David Ortiz estimated at 411 feet. In the top of the 3rd, 1946 got that run back plus one when Hal Wagner walked and scored the first run on a triple by Leon Culberson and Culberson scored on a sac fly by Wally Moses. Early 2-1 lead for 1946. Neither team scored again until the top of the 7th when Hal Wagner hit a triple and came home on a single by Culberson. Nursing a 3-1 lead in the top of the 8th, the 1946 team put the victory away scoring three more runs on a three run bomb by Hal Wagner that sent Schilling to the showers. In the bottom of the ninth, the 2004 Sox added a run on a RBI single by Bill Mueller to provide the final score of 6-2. Leon Culberson had four hits on the day and Hal Wagner chipped in with two hits and three RBI and three runs scored. Hughso
held the 2004 team to four hits through eight and a third innings before giving way to the bullpen for the save.

1946 Survives and is the first team to punch the ticket into the Rivalry Series!

Yankee Side:

Game 6 - Ralph Terry (0-3) vs. Herb Pennock (2-1)

With the mighty 1927 Yankees looking to close the book on the 1961 Yankees the '61 squad was pitching Ralph Terry who has been miserable in the YRRS to date with a double digit ERA. In the bottom of the first, Terry survived his first scare of the day, walking two and giving up a single but no runs. In the top of the second, Terry's 'mates gave him something rare in the YRRS, a lead. Mickey Mantle started the inning off with a walk, went to second on a single over second by Yogi Berra. Bill Skowron doubled Mantle in and Berra to third. Elston Howard hit a fly to center that Earle Combs camped under and threw a strike to Pat Collins to nail Berra at the plate. Skowron advanced to third on the throw home. Next up, Clete Boyer, on a 1-0 pitch from Herb Pennock, Boyer launched a tape measure shot out to left for a 3-0 lead. The lead would stay the same until the bottom of the 4th when 1927 broke the ice with an RBI double by Joe Dugan for a run, 3-1. The '61 Yankees held on to win 3-1 and force a game 7
ehind Ralph Terry and his seven strong innings. He gave up seven hits and a single run. Luis Arroyo finished the game and recorded his third save of the YRRS.

Game 7 - Bill Stafford (1-1) vs. Urban Shocker (3-0)

This game got out of the blocks quickly with the 1961 Yankees scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. Tony Kubek reached on a single, went to second on a hit by Roger Maris and reached third on an error on the throw in from right field that also let Maris get second. Mickey Mantle hit a deep fly to center that scored the first run. Yogi Berra followed that with a single up the middle that brought Maris in from second. 2-0 early lead for '61. The 1927 Yankees struck back in the bottom of the first, a two out single by Babe Ruth got it started. Lou Gehrig followed with a blistered double to center that Ruth just beat the throw home to score but an alert Elston Howard saw Gehrig going for third on the throw and sent a bullet down to Clete Boyer for the tag play and third out. Top of the second saw 1961 add to their lead with a pair of walks to start the inning and a run scoring double by Bobby Richardson. With second and third and nobody out Kubek lifted a fly out to left. Johnny Blanchard race
home and was called out on the throw. Maris flew out to end the inning. Both teams had run themselves out of potentially big innings, were nerves playing a part in the game? In the top of the fourth, 1961 scored two more making it 5-1. Kubek had another sac fly RBI and Maris added a RBI single. Leading 5-1 going to the sixth, '61 wasn't done yet. A leadoff double by Blanchard, a tagup and advance to third on a sac fly then scoring on a groundout deep in the hole at short. Now down 6-1, the '27 Yankees needed to get something going. In the bottom of the sixth, Babe Ruth hit a solo shot to right center, it would be the last run the '27 Yankees would score in the YRRS. 1961 Yanks added another insurance run in the top of the ninth on a homer by Mickey Mantle for the final score of 7-2. Bill Stafford went the distance allowing only six hits and two walks. For the '27 Yankees Ruth finished the YRRS hitting .449 with 4 HR and Gehrig hit .358 with one HR but in the end they didn't hit in the biggest gam
of the tournament. Roger Maris will go into the Rivalry Series against the 1946 RedSox hitting .395 with 12 HR and a team full of guys smacking the ball around.
